Once a year, we tried to get down to the coast of Kenya for a family vacation. The city of Mombasa itself is very old a quite run down. Most of the hotels, however, are not located in the city but all up and down the beach. They are spectacular resorts where European tourists vacation. It was rare to hear other people speaking English when we were on vacation. The water in the Indian Ocean is warm all year-round. The snorkeling is out of this world because there is a huge coral reef off the east coast. The fresh fruit is the sweetest you can imagine. There is nothing better than waking up to a sunny day, putting on your swim suit, having a breakfast of tea and fresh fruit served poolside on white linen, and lazing the day away. The sand on the beach is white and ultra fine. I could go on and on, but I think I've said enough. Here are some pictures. The first is of my brother and Bill swimming with dolphins. The second shows the poolside dining area. The third is of Wes playing on the beach as the tide is coming in. The last picture is one of the monkeys that was in the trees just outside our balcony. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of family vacations at the coast.
