Had You But Eyes

Had you but eyes to witness the happenings as you stood through the passage of time. And lips to speak of the creatures you've seen and the changes that have taken place. When dinosaurs roamed and trod on your top, or traditions of people groups dwelling in your shadows changed before your eyes. Did you witness a Great Flood and survive to tell of it? How strangely quiet it would have been after the water dried and life was no more. When the bones of the pre-historic creatures embedded themselves deeply into your surfaces, did you take pleasure in hiding the treasure? Did bullets ricochet off your face as on horseback men came? Did they hide in the crevices between each rock face? Was your surface used to sharpen arrowheads? Was your height and strength a protective wall for the covered wagons to circle up?
As you stood solid and strong, was your height in the sky used for lookout? If only those stripes on your sides could tell the stories of your scars. Did your foundations tremble and your loosened sand slide when a stampede of bison rumbled past your stoic face?
When clouds gather round and shower you with rain, do you smile as the scrubby plants take root? Does a sunrise today hold the same kind of awe as a sunrise 500 years ago? When so many people came to settle across the plains, were you saddened as they trod along carelessly? Perhaps it was rather refreshing to have your beauty recognized and appreciated. Is it tragic that roads now stretch along your base, or do you smile on the passersby as a matronly grandmother watching the children sit in awe of your stories? Had you but eyes to witness the passage of time, and lips to share of your wisdom.

"The mountains and hills shall burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the fields will clap their hands"

I have had those similar thoughts on my travels thru' this incredible country; but never would I be able to express them as you have. Thank you Carrie. It is so easy to bypass what we see as just that - what we see; and not to look in our souls to appreciate God's wonder.

Love,
OR Mom
